Abstract

This research is entitled “ The correlation between students’ understanding of simple present tense and their writing ability in describing object on simple sentences at the first grade of Junior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru”. The research had 3 formulations of the problems; The students’ understanding of simple present tense and their ability in writing descriptive text at the first grade of Junior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. and if there is a significant correlation between students’ simple present tense understanding and their ability in writing descriptive text at the first grade of Junior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. In this research, the research design was a correlational research. The population of this research was the first grade of students’ Junior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru in 2017/2018 academic year. It consisted of seven classes’ the number of population was 206 students. The sample of this research was 42 students. There was two tests (multiple choice for simple present tense understanding and writing test that the writer took from the result of the students’ test from the English teacher. The technique of analyzing data was Pearson Product Moment and it was eased by using SPSS 22 program. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there is a correlation between students’ understanding of simple present tense and their ability in writing descriptive text at the first grade of Junior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. It was considered from Sig (2-tailed)=0.000 that was smaller than α (0.05). It means that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. From the research findings, it showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ understanding of simple present tense and their ability in writing descriptive text at the first grade of Junior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru.
