The research design was a quasiexperimental study by comparing two strategies of two experimental groups pretest - posttest design. 60 participants were involved of two experimental groups and one control group of students of SMPN 1 Bangkinang. Three research questions and four hypotheses were given posed in this study in order to find out the significant difference between RAFT and POWER strategies on students’ writing ability. Pre-test and post-test were given in this research and independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The research finding shows that there was no difference of post-test mean scores between the experimental class 1 using RAFT strategy and the experimental class 2 using POWER strategy on students’ writing ability. RAFT strategy contributed the effect of improvement on students’ writing ability 71%, while POWER contributed 46%.
