Abstract

This research was aimed to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text by using group investigation (GI) strategy. The students had some problems in English subject especially in writing descriptive text such as they were not able to express their ideas and they were not able to clasify the generic structure of descriptive text. Therefore, this research discussed the students before and after being taught by using group investigation (GI) strategy and also to know whether or not there was a significant difference of students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The subject of this research was at the tenth grade students of MA-Alfajar Pekanbaru that consisted of 20 students. The design of this research was pre experimental research. The researcher used pre-test and post-test. Pre-test was given before treatment and post-test was given after treatment. The technique of collecting the data was composition of writing test. The topics related about describing people and pets. The technique of data analysis used ‘t’ test formula through SPSS 21 version. The result of analyzing the data showed that there was increasing on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text by using group investigation strategy. It showed mean score of pre-test (64.77). There were 2 students got enough crategorized and 18 students got less categorize. After doing post-test by using group investigation (GI) strategy, there was an improving of the result of the students’ mean score (88.35). There were 3 students got very good categorize, 14 students got good categorize and 2 students got enough categorize. Based on the data, there was a significant difference between the students ability in writing descriptive text before and after being taught by using Group Investigation (GI) strategy at the tenth grade students of MA Al-Fajar Pekanbaru. The finding of sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000. It can be showed that 0.000<0.05. It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Keywords: Students’ Ability, Descriptive Text, Group Investigation
