Abstract

Based on the writer pliminary study, it was found the problem of students’ ability in speaking English. The peroblems are some of the students were not able to pronounce English word accurately, some of the students were not able to speak English fluently, some of the students were not able to speak English in correct grammar, Some of the students lacked of vocasbulary, and some of the students were not able to comprehend English accurately. So, the writer was interested in offering Tic Tac Toe Game as an alternative solution for students’ speaking ability. The writer conducted a research at State Senior High School 1 Rokan IV Koto. The subject was the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 1 Rokan IV Koto and the object of this research was the effect of using Tic Tac Toe Game on students’ speaking ability. The design of this research was a Quasi-Experimental Research. The population of this reserach was all of the tenth grade students. The total number of population was 89 students. The writer used cluster random sampling technique by taking only two classes as sample; X MIA 1 consisted of 21 students as control class and X MIA 2 consisted of 21 students as experimental class. Finally, the number of the samples from two classes was 42 students. To analyze the data, the writer used independent sample t-test by using software SPSS 17 and effect size or (Eta Squared) formula. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that sig (2-tailed) value was 0.000 less than 0.05. It means null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In order words, there were significant difference of using and without using Tic Tac Toe Game on students’ speaking ability at the tenth grade of State Senior High School 1 Rokan IV Koto. Then, based on the result of effect size formula, it found that the effect sisze was 0.35 categorized into large effect. In conclusion, the using Tic Tac Toe Game has large effect on students’ speaking ability. Keywords: Effect, Tic Tac Toe Game, Speaking Ability
