Abstract

The problems of this research were found by the writer as follows; the low score for students’ reading text, lack of students’ vocabulary, lack of students’ awareness on the importance of reading habit, and students were unable to read and understand English text efficiently. This research was correlational research. It was conducted to find out the correlation between students’ reading habit in English and their vocabulary knowledge. The specific objective of this research was to find out whether there is or no significant correlation between students’ reading habit in English and their vocabulary. The population of this research was the tenth-grade students which consisted of 11 classes. The total population of this research was 396 students. The researcher used a Simple Random Sampling Technique to take the sample. Thus, the researcher took 40 students as the sample of this research. In collecting the data, the researcher used a questionnaire to measure students’ reading habit in English and multiple choice vocabulary test to measure the students’ vocabulary knowledge. The researcher analyzed the data by using Pearson Product Moment formula of SPSS Version 16.0. Based on the results, it was found that the mean score of students’ reading habit was 64.92 (good level), while their vocabulary was 68.00 (sufficient level). In terms of the correlation between students’ reading habit in English and their vocabulary, the researcher found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.000 < 0.005. Thus, the researcher concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the researcher found that the value of correlation coefficient (r) was 0.845 which indicated that there was a very strong positive correlation between the two variables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ reading habit in Englsh and their Vocabulary Knowledge at tenth grade of State Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru.
