Abstract

This research was conducted based on students’ problem in reading comprehension of narrative texts, say for instance, some of the students were difficult to identify the specific information, generic structures, language features, communicative purposes and references of narrative texts. Therefore, this research was aimed 1) to investigate students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts taught without using Directed Inquiry Strategy, 2) to investigate the students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts taught by using the Directed Inquiry Strategy, 3) to investigate whether there was significant difference on students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts taught without and by using the Puppet Show Strategy and 4) to investigate whether there was significant effect of using the Directed Inquiry strategy on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts of the eighth grade at State Junior High School 9 Pekanbaru. In this quasi experimental research, the writer applied cluster random sampling as the technique used. Overall population of the research was 269 students. The classes chosen were VIII 2 as the experimental class consisted of 32 students and VIII 4 as the control class consisted of 32 students, thus, the total samples of this research were 64 students by doing the post-test for both classes in gaining the result of this research. The result of data analysis showed that there is a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts taught without and by using the Directed Inquiry Strategy, in which the Sig (2-tailed) 0.000 had less value than 0.05. Thus, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Furthermore, there is a significant effect of using the Directed Inquiry strategy on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts of the eighth grade at State Junior High School 9 Pekanbaru, in which the result of eta squared 0.24 was bigger than 0.51. Keywords : Effect, Directed Inquiry Strategy, Reading Comprehension
