Abstract
This study explores the English learning goals of students in the English Education Department at an Islamic university in Pekanbaru and the strategies they employ to achieve them. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 25 third-year students through open-ended questionnaires and in-depth interviews, with four students selected for follow-up interviews. The findings reveal that students’ learning goals fall into four main categories: academic success, career advancement, personal growth, and global connectivity. Academic goals include improving proficiency for higher education, scholarships, and study abroad opportunities. Career-oriented goals focus on becoming competent English teachers or enhancing employability in global job markets. Personal growth goals emphasize building communication skills, confidence, and self-expression, while global connectivity goals involve engaging in cross-cultural interactions and accessing international knowledge. Strategies to achieve these goals include utilizing educational resources, engaging in language practice, integrating English into daily activities, using goal-setting and self-monitoring techniques, and seeking mentorship and feedback. The study highlights the dynamic nature of students’ goals, which are shaped by personal aspirations, cultural context, and institutional support, and shows how these goals guide their learning behaviors and strategies over time.
