Abstract

This study aims to explore teachers’ strategies in teaching English as a foreign language at SMK Telkom Pekanbaru within the framework of the merdeka curriculum implementation. The focus of this research is to gain an in-depth understanding of how teachers select and apply teaching strategies that align with the characteristics of vocational high school students, learning objectives, and classroom context, as well as the reasons behind their choices. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with two 10th grade English teachers, classroom observations, and focus group discussions (FGDS) with students. The findings reveal that the teachers utilized a variety of adaptive strategies, such as the use of visual media, educational games, group discussions, and process-based assessments. The choice of strategies was influenced by the complexity of the material, students’ needs, and the principles of Kurikulum Merdeka, which emphasizes flexible and student-centered learning. This study concludes that teaching strategies used under the merdeka curriculum are not merely technical practices but reflect a contextual and reflective understanding of the learning process. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of more effective and relevant English teaching practices at the vocational high school level.
