Abstract

This research aims to identify whether there is a significant effect of using crossword puzzles on students' reading comprehension. In this research, the design used was quasi-experiment, with control class and experimental class. The subjects of this research were students in class XI IPS1 and class XI IPS2 at SMAN 1 Sabak Auh in the 2023/2024 academic year. The total population was 67 students, and was selected using random cluster sampling, the sample used in this research was 41 students. With 20 students in the control class and 21 students in the experimental class, the researchers used crossword puzzles in the pre-test and post-test with text explanation type. The analysis used is the independent sample T-test via SPSS 21 and Cohens's Formula. The data results show that the (2-tailed) value of .001 can be stated as .001 < 0.05, meaning the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the effect size is 1,203 with a percentage of 96%. In conclusion, there is a significant influence on the reading ability of class XI students who are taught using and without using crossword puzzles at SMAN 1 Sabak Auh.
