Abstract

This research was a study of Asghar Ali Engineer's thoughts about pluralism. This research was motivated by many conflicts occurred between religious communities, besides, the conflicts between different religions that often occurred, there were also conflicts between people in the same religion or one believe that often occurred. For example, the conflicts among Muslims, because there were different flows, they blamed and misled each other, basically, Islam taught peace among living beings. In the current context, the pluralism was increasingly interested by many groups along with the increasing conflicts arising right now. Most of these conflicts were shown as a result of religious differences. According to Asghar Ali, due to the wrong understanding of key terms in Islam such as the nature of Islam, Kafir and Kufr, it was reasonable to assume that the heaven would only be monopolized by one particular religious group. Whereas according to Asghar Ali, Al-Qur'an was not doubt and Al-Qur’an emphasized that the heaven was not monopolized by certain religious groups. Whoever surrendered completely to Allah SWT and he conducted goodness, he would get a reward from Allah SWT. This view was based on Q.S. al-Baqarah (2): 112, Asghar Ali who was more inclined to liberal thought considered that all religions were the same, an attitude of openness, tolerance and mutual respect for other religions without imposing will on the sky religion, it was not monopolized by one religious group only as long as he conducted goodness and he surrendered to Allah SWT. Asghar's thoughts were very strong and it was influenced by the doctrines of relativism and humanism as a Western worldview and understanding.
