Abstract

CORRELATION BETWEEN AFFECTIVE FILTER AND STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AT SMKN 1 PEKANBARU ABSTRACT The aimed of this study were : to find out correlation between self-confidence and students’ speaking ability, to find out the correlation between anxiety and their speaking ability and to find out the correlation between self-confidence, anxiety and speaking ability. This research was a quantitative study study using statisitical data to calculate the correlation between variables. The result of the students showed that there was a correlation of affective filter (Self Confidence, motivation and anxiety) and Students’ Speaking ability. Considering the result of the research it can be concluded that if the students have high motivation, it will give effect to the students in speaking English. They would be motivated to speak English frequently. Then, if the students have good motivation, automatically they have good self confidence in speaking English. They will try if there is some mistake when speaking English. Further, the anxiety was also one of factor in achieving the English speaking ability. In summary, based on the result of the result score, the three items or affective filter have the correlation with the students’ speaking ability. When the students have good level of self confidence and motivation, they were able to speak English. But, If there were have high level of anxiety, they should find the more solution to avoid it to improve they ability in speaking. Keywords : Affective Filter, Speaking Ability
