Abstract

ABSTRACT Most thinkers agree that autonomy should be taken as a desirable for students to master language and pursue life-long learning. The importance of developing learner autonomy also becomes an important consideration in teaching and learning process. However, learner autonomy is still considered as a western concept and strange to learners in non-western cultures. In fact, learners are still not aware and doing less effort to be autonomous in learning. Hence, this study was aimed to investigate learners’ perceptions of autonomous language learning regarding their awareness and self-efforts in and out class. The researcher employed the quantitative research and a questionnaire as a tool which was developed and adapted to obtain the data. It was found that the learners had highly positive result towards autonomous language learning regarding their awareness and self-effort. It can be concluded that they make good practice and contribution of autonomous language learning. So, learners need to be autonomous by raising their awareness and self-effort to improve their language learning because passive presence is not enough to be autonomous learner.
