Abstract
ABSTRACT Mardiah, (2021): “The Use of Authentic Materials in Teaching English at Junior High Schools in Pekanbaru”. The objectives of this research was to describe the implementation of authentic materials in teaching English, to describe types of authentic material and to explore the English teacher perception toward the use of authentic materials in teaching English at junior high school in Pekanbaru. This study was conducted under the qualitative case study design. Purposeful sampling technique was used to select the participants of this study. The participants of this research were six English teachers from two junior high schools in Pekanbaru. The schools are SMPN 34 and MTS Hasanah Pekanbaru. The data were collected from the observation, documentation, questionnaire and interview. The data were analyzed and interpreted through qualitative procedures. The research findings were (1) the English teachers implemented authentic material by integrating four English skill and language component. (2) The teacher used three types of authentic materials in teaching: authentic listening-view material such as video and audio, authentic visual material such as picture, slide, things around and daily activities, and printed material such as material from internet. (3) The teacher perceptions of using authentic materials in teaching English were positive. Keywords: Authentic materials, teaching English
