Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary observation, it was found that the students could not comprehend the meaning of texts in their text books at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some of the students were not able to identify the main idea of narrative text, they were not able to identify supporting detail in narrative text, they were not able to recognize the generic structure of narrative text, they had limited vocabularies and also they were not able to identify pronominal reference of narrative text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about these problems. The research was administered at SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam. The subject of the research was the eight grade students of SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam, and the object of this research was the effect of using Finding Signal Word strategy on reading comprehension in narrative text. The design of this research was quasi- experimental design with non equivalent control group design. The population of this research was all of the eight grade students. The total number of population was 157 students. Because the number of population was relatively large, the writer used cluster sampling by taking two classes as sample; class X 1 consisted of 30 students as an experimental class, and class X 2 consisted of 30 students as control class, so the number of sample from two classes was 60 students. To analyze the data, the writer adopted Independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS 16.0 version. Finally, based on the analysis of T-test formula, H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of using Finding Signal Word strategy on reading comprehension in narrative text at SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam of Rohul Regency.
