Abstract
This research discussed about the correlation between self-monitoring and the students’ achievement in learning English at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru. The problem of the students can be seen in the following phenomena: (1) some of the students had frequency in practicing, but their learning achievement was still low (2) some of the students had low sense of self-efficacy in learning English (3) some of the students had low self-monitoring and learning achievement (4) some of the students cannot concentrate well during learning English (5) some of the students have low motivation in learning English. There were 3 formulations of the problems: (1) how is students’ self-monitoring at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru (2) how is students’ achievement in learning English at Junior High SchoolMuhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru (3) Is there any significant correlation between self-monitoring and the students’ achievement in learning English at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru. The objectives of the research was to find out students’ selfmonitoring at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru, to find out students’ achievement in learning English at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru, to find out whether there is any significant correlation between students’self-monitoring and their achievement in learning English at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru. Type of this research was correlational research. The technique of collecting the data used questionnaire and documentation where all students to be the respondents. The technique of data analysis used pearson product moment correlation coefficient by using SPSS 16.0 program in order to find out whether there is any significant correlation between students’self-monitoring and their achievement in learning English at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru. Based on the data analysis, it was found that ro 0.558 is higher than rtable at level 5%(0.281) and level 1 % (0.364). In conclusion, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which showed 0.281<0.558>0.364. In other words, there is a significant correlation between self-monitoring and the students’ achievement in learning English at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru.
