Abstract

This research was conducted because some problems were faced by the students in learning English especially in students’ motivation in learning speaking. The problems were; Some of the students do not want to involve themselves in learning speaking instructions. Some of the students do not pay attention in learning speaking. Some of the students are not interested in learning speaking. Some of the students are lazy in learning speaking. Some of the students are not able to understand what the speaker says. Some of the students are afraid of making mistakes to speak English. Some of the students have lack of self confidence when they are speaking in front of class. Some of the students are not able to pronounce words accurately. Some of the students pause and stop their speech when they are speaking. Some of students are not able to speak English grammatically. The objective of the research was to know whether or not there is significant difference between using and without using Stand-Up Hand-Up Pair- Up (SUHUPU) strategy on students’ motivation in speaking English of the second grade at MTs Hasanah Pekanbaru. The design of the research was nonequivalent control group in Quasi-Experimental research. The subject of the research was the second grade at MTs Hasanah that cosisted of 154 students. The data of the research were collected by two kinds of questionaire, pre- and post-questionaire. Pre-questionaire was used to determine the students’ motivation in learning speaking before getting the treatment and Post-questionaire was used to determine the students’ motivation in learning speaking after getting the treatment. In analyzing the data, the researcher adopted Independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS. The result was that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that teaching by using Stand-Up Hand-Up Pair-Up strategy has a significant difference in improving students’ motivation in speaking of the second grade at MTs Hasanah, Pekanbaru.
