Abstract

Basically, English is one of the important subjects which has been taught in SMAN 1 Bangkinang. In English, writing is one of the important language skills that should be mastered by the students. The students had been taught by using various techniques purposed to improve their English skill especially in writing spoof text. In reality, they were not able to write spoof text, so that what had been expected was unachievable. The weaknesses in writing spoof text explained by the writer were: some of the students were not able to express their ideas, some of the students were not able to use grammar appropriately in writing, and some of the students had lack of English vocabularies. These problems indicated that the second year students of SMAN 1 Bangkinang were poor in writing. The subject of this research was the second year of SMAN I Bangkinang. The object of this research was the effect of picture story toward students’ ability in writing spoof text. The instrument of this research was test. In analyzing the data, the writer used Paired Sample T-test which was proceeded by SPSS version 17.00. Based on the research finding, there is significant effect of using picture story toward students’ ability in writing spoof text. It was proved based on the score of t-test (5.683) which was greater than t-table at the 5% grade of significance = 0.355, while in the level of significance 1% = 0.456. It can be read that 0.355< 5.683> 0.456. It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and alternative hypotheis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, the writer concludes that picture story gives a postive effect toward students’ ability in writing spoof text.
