Abstract

ABSTRACT The development of information technology in communication makes it easier for someone to build relationships with other people without having to meet face to face, one of them by utilizing the internet. Communication through internet information technology using media is called social media, Instagram is one of the social media which often used. One of the factors that predict the intensity of using Instagram social media on individual including students is the perceived social support. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between perceived social support and intensity using Instagram social media. The research subjects were students of the Faculty of Psychology UIN SUSKA Riau. Sample in this study (N = 280) were retrieved with purposive sampling, subjects were completing a questionnaire in the form of scale. Pearson’s product-moment analysis was conducted, there was a negative significant correlation between perceived social support and the intensity of using Instagram social media in students of the Faculty of Psychology UIN SUSKA Riau (r = -0.182; p < 0.01). Thus, support the hypothesis which states that there is a negative significant relationship between perceived social support and the intensity of using Instagram social media in students of the Faculty of Psychology, UIN SUSKA Riau. Also, a determination coefficient of 0,33 was obtained, which means perceived social support had an effective contribution of 3,3% to the intensity of using Instagram social media in students of the Faculty of Psychology, UIN SUSKA Riau. Results indicated there was a correlation between perceived social support and the intensity of using Instagram social media in students of the Faculty of Psychology, UIN SUSKA Riau.
