Abstract

ABSTRACT Murpianti (2019) : The Correlation between Studens’ Self Anxiety and their Speaking Performance at State Vocational High School of PGRI Pekanbaru The students’ performance in speaking English can be influenced by psychological aspect, in this case, anxiety. When the learners have high anxious feeling, worry, or fear in foreign language class, they may get difficulties to increase their ability in speaking that language. This study is intended to find out whether or not there was the correlation between students’ anxiety and their performance in speaking class. This research was a correlational research. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students which consist of 4 classes. The total population of this research was 136 students. The researcher used simple random sampling technique. Thus, the research took 30 participants as the sample of this research. In collecting data, the researcher used two techniques; there were questionnair, used to determine anxiety, and test, used to find out students’ speaking performance. The technique of analyzing data used was person product moment by SPSS 22 program. Based on the result, the researcher concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ self anxiety and their speaking performance at state Vocational High School of PGRI Pekanbaru. It could be seen from sig.(2-tailed) = 0.000 that was smaller than α(0.05). it means that H vi 0 was rejected and H was accepted. The value of correlation cooficient (r) was -.803. from the research findings, it can be concluded that there is a significant negative correlation between students’ self anxiety and their speaking performance at state Vocational High School of PGRI Pekanbaru.
