Abstract

MTs Al-FajarPekanbaru is one of the schools that used School Based Curriculum in teaching and learning process. Based on School Based Curriculum, one of the purposes of learning English is the students can write short text and simple essay; descriptive and recount. After doing the observation, the researcher found some problems, such as; some of the students were not able to write descriptive text correctly, not able to use language features, and not able to choose appropriate vocabulary. Some of them also did not know the head, modifier and function of noun phrase.The purpose of this research was to find out students’ understanding of noun phrase, to find out students’ ability in writing descriptive text, and to find out whether there was a relationship between students’ understanding of noun phrase and their ability in writing descriptive text. The researcher used test to find out both of students’ understanding of noun phrase and their ability in writing descriptive text. In analyzing the data, the researcher used pearson product moment correlation coefficient SPSS 16.0. The result was sig. = 0.940 ≥ α (0.05). So, the conclusion was there was no relationship between students’ understanding of noun phrase and their ability in writing descriptive text.
