Abstract

This research is entitled “The correlation between students’ simple past tense comprehension and their ability in writing narrative paragraphs at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru”. The research had 3 formulations of the problems; How is students’ simple past tense comprehension at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru,how is students’ ability in writing narrative paragraphs at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru, and whether there is or no significant correlation between students’ simple past tense comprehension and their ability in writng narrative paragraphs at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru.The objectives of the research was to find out the students’ simple past tense comprehension at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru, to find out students’ ability in writing narrative paragraphs at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru and to find out the correlation between students’ simple past tense comprehension and their ability in writing narrative paragraphs at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru. In this research, the research design was a correlational research. The population of this research was the first grade of students’Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru in 2016/2017 academic year. It consisted of nine classes; the number of population was 276 students. The sample of this research was 60 students taken from two classes. They were X MIA 2 and X IIS 1. There was two tests (multiple choice for simple past tense comprehension and make writing narrative paragraphs based on the 3 topics given to the sample, they only choose 1 topic for writing narrative paragraph). The technique of analyzing data was Pearson Product Moment and it was used by using SPSS 24 program. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there is no a correlation between students’ simple past tense comprehension and their ability in writing narrative paragraphs at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru.It was considered from Sig. (2-tailed)=0.237 that was higher than α (0.05). It means that Ho was accepted and Ha was rejected. From the research findings, it showed that there was not a significant correlation between students’ simple past tense comprehension and their ability in writing narrative paragraphs at the first grade of Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru Keywords : Simple Past Tense Comprehension, Ability in Writing Narrative Paragraphs
