Abstract

The 2013 curriculum stated that students must be able to produce oral and written Paragraph fluently and accurately. Logically, the students are able to write accurately and correctly the goal of teaching should be achieved but it is contradictory with the real situation, those are because some of students are not able to master grammar as a one of importance competence in English. Therefore, this research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their writing ability on descriptive Paragraph at the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Tapung. The research design was a correlation research. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Tapung in 2017/20118 academic year. It consisted of five classes; the number of population was 122 students. The sample of this research was 50 students taken from 5 classes (10 students in each class). They were X IPA 1, X IPA 2, X IPS 1, X IPS 2, X IPS 3 two tests (completion test for grammar mastery and writing test for writing descriptive paragraph). The technique of analyzing data was Pearson Product Moment and it was eased by using SPSS 21 Program. Based on the data analysis, the researcher concluded that there is a correlation between grammar mastery and writing descriptive ability at the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Tapung. It was considered from sig. (2- tailed) =0.00 that was lower than α (0.05). It means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. From the research findings, it showed that that there was a correlation between grammar mastery and writing descriptive paragraph ability at the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Tapung.
