Abstract
This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in writing recount text. Based on the preliminary research, it was found that students’ ability in writing recount text was low such as unable to write orientation, unable to develop the ideas, unable to use good grammatical order, unable to write reorientation, and unable to use the chronological order in a recount text so that this research aimed at finding out the effect of using Story Maps strategy on students’ ability in writing recount text at Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. This research was a quasiexperimental research. Therefore, this researchused two classes; control class and experimental class. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The object of this research was Story Maps strategy and their writing ability on recount text. The sample of this research used cluster random sampling. There were 40 students as sample from 131 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used independent sample test by using SPSS 19 version and effect size formula by Julie Pallant. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that the result of effect size formula was 0.39. It was categorized into large effect. It means that there was a significant effect of using Story Maps strategy on students’ ability in writing recount text at Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru.
