Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe listening problems and the factors affecting students’ listening comprehension problems at the third year of MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The subjects of this research were 25 students of XII Bahasa. This research was a Descriptive Research. The study used a questionnaire and focus group interviews. The techniques for analyzing data of questionnaire are by Ms. Excel program and focus group interviews used reduction of the data, the display of data, and conclusion or verification. The finding of this study indicated that students at the third year of MAN 1 Pekanbaru encounter various kinds of listening comprehension problems that the strongest problem related to the speaker 16% from 100%; such as the speakers speak too fast and has an unclear pronunciation. However, the factors affecting students come from the external and internal factor that mostly caused the listener to have listening problems as they lack practicing listening skill and lack of exposure to different kinds of listening. The result of this study could be used as one of the references for the teachers to help students overcome these problems. Keywords: Descriptive Research, Listening Comprehension Problems.
