Abstract

This research title is The Correlation between Student’s Motivation in Learning English and their Speaking Fluency at MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The research had 1 formuation of the problem; is there any significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and students’ speaking fluency MAN 1 Pekanbaru? This Research was to find out the significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their speaking fluency of the twelfth grade students at MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The subject of this research was the twelfth grade students of MAN 1 Pekanbaru, while the object of this research was students’ motivation in learning English and students’ speaking fluency. The instrument used in this research were questionnaire, observation and interview, in which the questionnaire in the form of multiple choice and observation were for X variables (students’ motivation in learning English) and the interview was for Y variable (students’ speaking fluency). The population in this research was 315 students. Then in taking sample , the writer took 30 students, the writer employed simple random sampling technique. By using product moment formula through SPSS 16.00 in analyzing the data, the writer found that r null was 0.325 and r table was 0.555 at the level of 5% and 0.418 at the level 1%. In other words, r null is higher than r table either at 5% or 1% level (Hₒ is rejected and Ha is accepted ). In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their speaking fluency of the twelfth grade students at MAN 1 Pekanbaru
