Abstract

ABSTRACT Annisa (2025): Students’ Experiences of Using Self-Assessment in Academic Writing Class: A Case Study at English Education Department of Islamic University in Pekanbaru This research aimed at investigating students' experiences of using self-assessment in an academic writing class at English Education Department of an Islamic University in Pekanbaru. This research used a qualitative research approach with a case study research design. Participants in this research were students who had experience with self-assessment in their academic writing class, totaling five informants and taken using purposive sampling. In collecting data, the researcher used interviews and documentation. The study found that students' perceptions of self-assessment varied, with some having a superficial understanding. Self-assessment was seen as a tool for improving writing competence and identifying weaknesses. Challenges in self-assessment included difficulties with grammatical precision, objectivity, and maintaining motivation. Students also provided suggestions for enhancing self-assessment practices in academic writing class.
