Abstract

This research aims to explore how teachers apply student-centered learning in improving students’ reading comprehension of report text and to identify factors that influence student-centered learning in one of the vocational high schools in Pekanbaru. Teachers of English at the school implement student-centered learning in improving students’ reading comprehension of the report texts, but the application of teachers after engaging in it has not been explored. To explore the implementation of student-centered learning these research teachers applied using a qualitative research approach with a case study research design. To select participants used purposive sampling technique. The study participants were two English teachers, and two groups of students from the tenth grade. Data collection was done through observations, interviews, and focus group interview. The findings show implementation of student-centered learning is categorized into three; (1) communicative implementation of student-centered learning in improving students reading comprehension of report texts, (2) implementation of student-centered learning that is in accordance with learning outcomes, (3) flexible implementation of student-centered learning in improving reading comprehension. It was also found that there were two types of factors in influencing the implementation of studentcentered learning in improving students’ reading comprehension of report texts. The first type is the supporting factors which include (1) the nature of the learner, (2) the teachers and (3) the content of curriculum. The second type is the inhibiting factors which include the learning environment. In conclusion, the teachers have applied student-centered learning well in improving students’ reading comprehension of the report texts at a vocational high school in Pekanbaru.
