Abstract
Feed is one of the important factors in the livestock business. Water hyacinth can be made into one alternative feed by fermentation. This study aimed to determine the effect of fermentation duration on the physical and nutritional quality of the water hyacinth. This research held in April to Mei 2016 in the Laboratory Agrostology, Feed Industry and Soil Sciences and the Laboratory of Nutrition and Chemistry, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of State Islamic University Sultan Syarif Kasim of Riau. This Research was conducted by experiment. The study design used was completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 3 treatments and 6 replications. The treatment in this study was fermentation timeA = 7 days, B = 14 days and C = 21 days. The parameters observed in the form of physical (pH, color, smell, texture and mushrooms availability) and nutrients crude protein and crude fiber. The results of this study that the fermentation duration gives effect in improving the quality of pH, color, smell and crude protein, but cannot improve of mushroom, tecture availability and crude fiber. As conclusion that the fermentation up to 14 days could increase percentage of crude protein (11,39%) and decrease percentage crude fiber (19,53%). Keywords : fermentation duration, nutrients, silage, physical properties, water hyacinth
