Abstract
Based on the writer’s observation and English teacher’s explanation, English was taught atSMAN 12 Pekanbaru by implementing School Based Curriculum (2006 Curriculum). In the curriculum, at the semester two of the second year, It was taught 2 meetings for 45 minutes in a week. Standard competence of reading is to understand the meaning of short functional written text and simple short essay such as descriptive and recount related to environment. While in the standard competence, there were three kinds of basic competence, they were reading aloud functional and simple short essay such as descriptive and recount by accepting utterance, pressure, and intonation related to around environment. Thus, the researcher was interested in conducting the research entitled“The Effect of Using Give One Get One Strategy On Students’ Reading Comprehension of the Second Year at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru”. The objectives of this research were to find out the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text taught and without taught by using Give One Get One Strategy (conventional strategy) of the second year students at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru, and to find out significant difference between students’ ability who were taught using Give One Get One Strategy and those students who were not taught using Give One Get One Strategy (conventional strategy) of the second year students at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The type of this research was a quasiexperimental. The subject of this research was the second year students at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru, and the object was the effect of usingGive One Get One Strategy onstudents’ reading comprehension in narrative text of the second year at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru.The sample was chosen through cluster sampling technique.One class was as an experimental class and another one was as a control class.To analyze the data, the writer used independent Ttest formula. Finally, from the result of data analysis, the writer found that To was higher than Ttable.In other word, Hawas accepted and H0was rejected.It means thatthere is a significantt effect of using Give One Get One strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. Therefore,it can be concluded that students’ reading comprehension taught by using Give One Get One strategy was better than students’ reading comprehension taught without using Give One Get One strategy.
