Abstract

Based on School Based Curriculum (KTSP), the purpose of learning English is to develop students’ competence in oral and written communication in order to reach the functional literacy. After doing the observation at Junior High School 10 Tapung, the researcher found and identified several problems that students had in reading comprehension such as some of the students got difficulty to identify information from descriptive text, some of the students had lack of vocabulary, some of the students gave up when they face any difficulties in reading task, and some of the students had low confidence in learning reading. The purpose of this research was to determine self-esteem of the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency, to determine reading comprehension of the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency, and also to determine whether there was or not significant correlation between students’ self-esteem and reading comprehension of the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. This research was a correlational research. Questionnaire was used to determine self-esteem of the students and test was used to determine the students’ reading comprehension. The subject of this research was the seven grade students at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. Overall the research population was 112 students. The researcher took 30 students as the sample. In analyzing the data, the researcher used pearson product moment correlation formula. The result of the analysis of this research was 0.628 higher than rtable at level 5% (0.374) and at level 1% (0.479). It can be concluded that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In other words, there was significant positive correlation between students’ self-esteem and their reading comprehension of the seven grade at Junior High School 10 Tapung Kampar Regency. Thus, it can be concluded that the higher the students’ self-esteem is, the higher the students’ reading comprehension will be.
