Abstract

Reading is one of the skills in English needed to be learned by students including the second grade at MTs Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru. Therefore, the students are expected to be able to master the reading skill. Based on the fact, the students had difficulties in reading comprehension. In this case, the author as a researcher provided a strategy Index Card Match and Word Square to improve students’ ability in reading comprehension. This strategy was used to improve memory and understanding of students in a particular matter. The objectives of the research were to find out the students’ reading ability taught by using Index Card Match and Word Square of the second year students Darel Hikmah Boarding School Pekanbaru and to determine whether there was significant differences between reading ability taught by using Index Card Match and Word Square of the second year students Darel Hikmah Boarding School Pekanbaru In this research, the type of research was comparative experiment. Comparative experiment is an experiments carried out to make comparison. This research was done to compare the experimental treatment and the effect of this treatment on the population selected. The writer used cluster sampling technique by taking only two classes as sample ; VIII A2 as experimental class and VIII A3 as control class. Before giving the treatment, the students were given pre-test and post-test was given after the treatment. The technique of data analysis used independent t-test formula in order to find out the amount of relationship between pre-test and post-test by using software SPSS 16. Both of these classes were given the treatment during six meetings. The technique of collecting data was written test with multiple choice. The subject of the research was the second year students Darel Hikmah Boarding School Pekanbaru. Based on the research findings, the author concluded thatt is higher thant table. Where t-test = 3.297 is greater than t-table at the significant level was 5% = 2.00 and at the level of 1% = 2.65. Which 2.00 < 3.297> 2.65. It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. In other words, there is a significant difference between reading ability taught by using Index Card Match and Word Square of the second year students Darel Hikmah Boarding School Pekanbaru.
