Abstract

Problems experienced by students at MAN Kampar Timur in reading comprehension really needed the correct solution. After doing writer observed there, some of the students at the eleventh grade still had problems in comprehending text. Deriving from thus problems, the researcher was interested in conducting a research entitled “The Effect of Using Free Voluntary Reading Strategy on Reading Comprehension of the Eleventh Grade Students at MAN Kampar Timur”. The main focus of this research was to find out a significant effect of using Free Voluntary Reading Strategy on reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students at MAN Kampar Timur. The type of research was quasi-experimental research. The subject of this research was the eleventhgrade students at MAN Kampar Timur. In this research, the researcher took two classes; experimental and control class from the two classes of social major. There were 60 students as sample from 150 students of population after doing cluster sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used multiple choices test. In analyzing the data, the researcher usedindependent t-test formulaoperated by SPSS 16 version. Finally, the researcher found that the mean score of students’ reading comprehension of post-test in experimental class was higher than post-test in control class. Furthermore, the category of students’ reading comprehension improvement in experimental class was good, while in control class was enough. In other words, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which showed 2.00<5.208>2.65.It can be concluded that, there is a significant effect of using Free Voluntary Reading Strategy on reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students at MAN Kampar Timur.
