Abstract

ABSTRACT Zuliana NS (2021): Students’ Pronunciation Errors at Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 1 Keritang Indragiri Hilir Regency The aim of this research was to find out what are the students' errors and the sources of the students' errors in pronouncing the vowel and consonant sounds through reading aloud. This research design was a case study as part of qualitative research. In taking participants, the researcher used maximal variation sampling as a part of purposive sampling. The data in this study were obtained from recordings of two texts about short stories that were tested on 10 eleventh grade students of Senior High School 1 Keritang, Indragiri Hilir Regency. In addition, the researcher also interviewed 10 students to find out the sources of errors in the pronunciation of vowels and consonants through reading aloud. The results of this study indicate that the most errors occurred in the vowel sound both in text I and text II, namely in the middle /ə/ sound with a total frequency of 145 with a percentage of 10.06% in text I and text II with a total frequency of 128 with a percentage of 8.31% from 10 students. Whereas, in consonant sounds the most occurred in both text I and text II, namely in the fricative /ð/ sound with a total frequency of 238 with a percentage of 16.53% in text I and text II with a total frequency of 166 with a percentage of 10.77% from 10 students. The total number of errors in vowel was about 406 of 28.19% in text I and 469 of 30.38% in text II. Meanwhile, the total number of errors in consonant sounds was about 548 of 38.06% in text I and 555 of 35.89% in text II. This study also found four sources of student error in pronouncing vowel and consonant sounds, namely: interlingual error, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategies.
