Abstract
Based on the writer’s preliminary study at State Senior High School 1 Kampar, it was found that some of the students were not able to get information from hortatory exposition text, some of the students were not able to know the meaning of some of vocabulary, some of thestudents had difficulties to find the key word in the text, some of the students got difficulties to answer the questionsrelated to the text, and some of the students need much time to comprehend the reading text. Therefore to solve these problems, it needed an appropriate strategy and Arguments on a Card strategy was considered to be a strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension. The objectives in this research is to find out whether there is significant difference of reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text before being taught by using Arguments on a Card Strategy for experimental class and conventional teaching strategy for control class of the second year at State Senior High School 1 Kampar, to find out whether there is significant difference of reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text after being taught by using Arguments on a Card Strategy for experimental class and conventional teaching strategy for control class of the second year students at State Senior High School 1 Kampar, and to find out whether there is significant effect of using Arguments on a Card Strategy toward reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text of the Second year students at State Senior High School 1 Kampar. The population of this research was the second year studentsat SMAN 1 Kampar, and the sample was XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 2. This research was a quasi experimental research with non equivalent control group design. The instrument of this research was test. The test form was multiple choice with 25 questions. To analyze the data, the writer adopted Independent sample Ttest formula and Paired Sample Ttest by using SPSS. Based on the data analysis of students’ mean score pretest and post test in experimental class, it was found that the mean score of post test in experimental class was higher than the students’ mean score pretest in experimental class. Finally, based on the analysis of Paired Sample T test formula, it was found that t0 was higher than T table in either at level of significance of 5% and 1%. In the other word, it can be read 2.03<8.725>2.72.So, it can be analyzed that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. It shows that there is a significant effect of using Arguments on a Card strategy toward reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text of the second year students at SMAN 1 Kampar.
