Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the students could not comprehend the meaning of the narrative text in their text book at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some of the students had difficulties in finding the topic from reading text, had difficulties in determining the generic structure of the text and had difficulties in understanding words in the text. This research was conducted with the objective to find out whether or not the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text taught by using Exclusion Brainstorming strategy is higher than those were taught without using Exclusion Brainstorming strategy and to find out whether there is a significant effect of using Exclusion Brainstorming strategy toward students’ reading comprehension in narrative text of the second year at SMA Islam Terpadu Bangkinang or not. The design of this research was a quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was all of the second year students. The total number of population was 105 students. The writer used clustering random sampling by taking two classes as sample; class 2 IPA.1, consisted of 27 students as experimental class group and 2 IPA. 2, consisted of 27 students as control group. To analyze the data, the writer adopted independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there is a significant effect of using Exclusion Brainstorming Strategy towards reading comprehension in narrative text by the second year students of SMA Islam Terpadu Bangkinang, where tobserved shows 5.949 at significance level of 5%, ttable shows 2.00, and at level of 1% ttable shows 2.65. Thus, Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, which shows 2.00<5.949>2.65.
