Abstract
Reading is the most important skill among the four skills in learning English and being able to comprehend various English texts is an expectation of the students. The expectation has not seemed to be realized yet. It was found that the some problems were faced by the students in reading comprehension and it can be seen from the phenomena: Some of the students are not able to identify main idea from the text,Some of the students are difficult to answer the questions related to the text,Some of the students are not able to get information from the text and so forth. So, the researcher was interested in carrying out the research about the problems by applying four step summary strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this research was to find out the significant effect of using four step summary strategy toward students’ reading comprehension at the second year of SMAN 1 Tualang. In this research, the researcher used a quasy experimental design with non equivalent control group. Therefore, the researcher took two classes as the sample of this research. The populationwas the second year students of SMAN 1 Tualang. The number of students was 288 that consisted of 8 classes. Because the population was large, The researcher used cluster sampling to determine sample in the research. and got 2 classes. One class was as a control class and the other class was as a treatment/experimental class.The researcher gave pre and post tes to both classes. There were 8 (eight) meetings in giving treatments to experimental class including pretest and posttest. In collecting the data, the researcher used test. The type of the test was multiple choice. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Ttest formula by using SPSS program. The research findings show the tobserved is higher than t table whether in the level of 5% and 1% (2.00 <7.081>2.65). The researcher concludes that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of using Four Step Summary strategy toward students’ reading comprehension on analytical exposition text at the second year students of SMAN 1 Tualang.
