Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the students could not comprehend the meaning of texts in their text books at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some students had difficulties in identifying main idea from the reading text, and had difficulties in comprehending the reading text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The research was administered at Senior High School Yayasan Lembaga Pendidikan Islam (YLPI) Pekanbaru. The subject of the research was the second year students of Senior High School Yayasan Lembaga Pendidikan Islam (YLPI) Pekanbaru, and the object of this research was the effect of using Read, Ask question, and Put into your own word strategy. The population of this research was all of the second year students of Senior High School Yayasan Lembaga Pendidikan Islam (YLPI) Pekanbaru. The total number of population was 114 students. The writer took only two classes as the sample by using cluster sampling; class XI IPA 1, consisted of 35 students as experimental class, and class XI IPA 2, consisted of 35 students as control class, so the numbers of sample from two classes were 70 students. The design used in this research was quasi-experimental research that was non-equivalent control group design. In collecting data, the writer used test, it was used in order to collect data of reading comprehension. The test consisted of two tests; pre-test was used to determine students’ reading comprehension before getting the treatment and post-test was used to determine students’ reading comprehension after getting the treatment. By the gathering data pre-test and posttest from both experiment and control class, the effect of treatment was analyzed with independent T-test formula. From the research findings, the score of to was higher than ttable, therefore, howas rejected and ha was accepted, where tobserved shows 7.180 at significant level of 5%, ttable shows 2.00, and at level of 1%, ttable shows 2.65. Thus, Null Hypothesis (Ho) is Rejected, and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is Accepted, which shows 2.00<7.180>2.65. It can be concluded that students’ reading comprehension after being taught by using Read, Ask question, and Put into your own word strategy was better than students’ reading comprehension before being taught by using Read, Ask questions, and Put into your own words strategy.
