Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the comparison between Reading, Encode, Annotate, Ponder (REAP ) and Role, Audience, Format, Topic (RAFT ) strategies for students' writing skills. The research design was a Quasi-Experimental Research by comparing two strategies of two experimental groups and one pretest-posttest designed control group. It involved 69 students consisted of two experimental groups and one control group of students at SMPN 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang.Nine research questions and Nine hypotheses were proposed in this research“to determine the significant differences between REAP and RAFT strategies on students' writing skills”. Pretest and posttest were given in this research and an independent t-test sample and a paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that there was a significant difference from the post-test which means the scores between the experimental class 1 used the REAP strategy and the class 2 experiments used the RAFT strategy were toward students' writing skills. The results indicated that there was a significant difference from the post-test which means the scores between the experimental class 1 used the REAP strategy and the experimental class 2 used the RAFT strategy were toward students' writing skills.The REAP strategy contributed to the effect of students writing improvement of 94%,while RAFT contributed 91%, and control class contributed 84%. Finally, it can be concluded that both the REAP and RAFT strategies can be applied in teaching writing at SMPN 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang.
