Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate a comparison between the effects of using Jigsaw and Numbered Head Together Strategies toward the students' comprehension of reading narrative text. The design of this study was a quasi-experimental research. This study involved 56 students consisting of an experimental group I and an experimental group II from SMP IT Al-Izhar Pekanbaru. Four hypotheses were proposed in this study to determine the significant differences between Jigsaw and Numbered Head Together strategies on students' reading comprehension. Pre-test and posttest were given to the sample in this research. Besides that, the samples of t-test and paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The results of the research indicated that there was no significant difference between the experimental group I using Jigsaw and the experimental group II using Numbered Head Together in reading comprehension of the students. The improvement of the students' reading comprehension using Jigsaw strategy was 99%, while Numbered Head Together was 60%. It can be concluded that Jigsaw and Numbered Head Together can be applied in teaching reading comprehension at SMP IT Al-Izhar Pekanbaru
