Abstract
The purpose of this research was to compare the effect of Four Square and Decide-Estimate-Figure-Express-Note-Drive-Search (DEFENDS) strategies for students’ writing skills. It was done through quasi-experimental design by comparing two strategies for two experimental groups of pretest-posttest design. It involved 46 students of SMPN 1 Kuantan Mudik that comprised of two experimental groups. Four research questions and four hypotheses were proposed to determine the significant differences between Four Square and DEFENDS strategies in improving students’ writing skills. The pretest and posttest were administered to both groups of students. To analyze the data, t-tests for independent and paired samples were used. The results showed that there was no significant difference in posttest scores between experimental group 1 (Four Square strategy) and experimental group 2 (DEFENDS strategy). The effect (contribution) of Four Square strategy on the students’ writing skills was 55%, while the DEFENDS strategy’s contribution was 72%. In conclusion, both strategies can be used in teaching writing skills at the school.
