Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of using Collaborative Strategy Reading (CSR) and Know – Want to Know – Learn (KWL) Strategic Reading on students’ reading comprehension of the second year students at SMPIT Al Bayyinah Pekanbaru. The design of this research was a comparative quasy experimental research with pre-test and post-test equivalent group design. This research involved 48 participants that were divided into an experimental group 1 and an experimental group 2. Four research questions and eight hypotheses were posed in this study in order to find out the significant difference between CSR and KWL on students’ reading comprehension. Pre-test and post-test were administered in this study for both experimental group 1 and experimental group 2. Independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The research finding showed that there was no significant difference on students’ reading comprehension post test mean score between the experimental group 1 which was taught by CSR and the experimental group 2 which was taught by KWL. T-test result was -0.861, its df was 46, SD of experimental group 1 was 15.24 and experimental group 2 was 18.14. So, in the conclusion p=0.394, the 2-tailed value was bigger than 0.05 (p>0.05). It could be determined that the subjects in both groups are equivalent after giving the treatments. CSR and KWL Strategic Reading contributed to the improvement on students’ reading comprehension 19%. Thus, it could be concluded that both CSR and KWL Strategies could be applied in teaching reading comprehension at SMPIT Al Bayyinah Pekanbaru.
