Abstract

This research was aimed to compare the effect of using Visual Imagery Strategy and Self-Monitoring Approach for Reading and Thinking (SMART ) Strategy on students’ reading comprehension. The design of this research was a comparative quasi-experimental research with a pre-test and post-test equivalent group design. This research involved 63 participants broken into an experimental group 1 and an experimental group 2. Four research questions and eight hypotheses were posed in this study in order to find out the significant difference between Visual Imagery Strategy and SMART Strategy towards students’ reading comprehension. A pre-test and a post-test were administered for both experimental group 1 and experimental group 2. Independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The research findings showed that there was no significant difference of students’ reading comprehension post test mean score between the experimental group 1 which was taught by using Visual Imagery Strategy and the experimental group 2 which was taught by using SMART Strategy. The data analysis provided the evidence that the t-test result was 1.79, its df was 60, the standard deviation of the experimental group 1 was 6.27 and the experimental group 2 was 7.31. In conclusion p = 0.079, the 2-tailed value was bigger than 0.05 (p>0.05). It could be deterrnined that the subjects in both groups were equivalent after being given the treatments. Visual Imagery Strategy contributed to the effect of improvement on the students’ reading comprehension of 72% while SMART Strategy contributed up to 76%. At last, it could be concluded that both Visual Imagery Strategy and SMART strategy could be applied in teaching students reading comprehension at SMK Keuangan Pekanbaru.
