Abstract

According to the preliminary research, it was found that the second year students of State Senior High School 1 Mandau got difficulties in speaking such as some students are confused in giving ideas, some students forgot about the ideas they want to bring, some of others are nervous when they speak in front of the class, and difficult to pronounce the English word correctly so that the aim of this research was to determine students’ frequency in using English of the second year at State Senior High School 1 Mandau, to investigate their speaking ability in storytelling, and to determine whether there was or not significant relationship between students’ frequency in using English and their speaking ability in storytelling. This was a correlational research design, questionnaire was used to determine students’ frequency in using English result and their recorded speaking ability in storytelling was used to determine the speaking ability which had been evaluated by two raters. The population of the research was all of the second year students of State Senior High School 1 Mandau with the total number of 372 students. Then, in determining the sample the researcher used proportional random sampling technique. The total number of the sample was 38 students. The researcher used Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, the result of the analysis calculated by SPSS 21.0 program. Based on the data analysis, it showed that sig-t = .000 was smaller than 0.05 (sig-t ≤ 0.05). It can be concluded that Ha (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. In other words, there was a significant relationship between the students’ frequency in using English and their speaking ability in storytelling at State Senior High School 1 Mandau.
