Abstract

Based on the preliminary-observation, the researcher found some students’ problems in learning English, especially in reading comprehension. The problems were the difficulty in identifying the orientation, complication, social function, meaning of word, and generic structure of narrative text in order to understand the text clearly. This research was carried out to find out, how the students’ reading comprehension taught without using DARTs Strategy and taught by using DARTs Strategy is, whether there is a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension taught without using DARTs Strategy and taught by using DARTs Strategy, and whether there is a significant effect of using DARTs Strategy on students’ reading comprehension of Narrative Text. This research was conducted at State Senior High School 1 Kampar Kiri Tengah Districts and the subject of this research was the eleventh grade students. The design of this research is a Quasi-Experimental research. The writer had two classes as the sample of this research. They were class XI IPS 3 as experimental class and XI IPS 4 as control class where each class consists of 32 students. Then, cluster random sampling was the technique to take a sample. Further, in analyzing the data, the writer used Independent Sample T-test formula by using SPSS 23 Version. After calculating the scores, the researcher found the result of T-test was 5.194. Then to was compared with ttable from df=62 that showed at significance level of 5% was 2.00 and at level of 1% it was 2.65. It can be read that 2.00<5.194>2.65. It means that tobtained > ttable, Ha1 is accepted and Ho2 was rejected. In addition, the eta squared calculation showed 0.30 which was higher than 0.14. Therefore, Ha2 was accepted and Ho2 was rejected. Based on the calculation, the writer concluded that there is a significant effect of teaching English using DARTs strategy on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at the eleventh grade of State Senior High School 1 Kampar Kiri Tengah.
