Abstract

Based on School-based curriculum, the purpose of learning English is to develop students’ competence in oral and written communication in order to reach the functional literacy. Junior High School 2 Cerentiis one of the schools that uses this curriculum in teaching and learning process. After doing the observation at Junior High School 2 Cerenti, the writer found that students still had difficulties and made errors in using degree of comparison on their writing ability. They have been taught about degree of comparison but they still made errors in differentiating between positive, comparative, and superlative degree. This research aimed at finding out the types of error made by students in using degree ofcomparison on their writing ability at the third year of junior high school 2 Cerenti. This research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze students’ errors in using degree of comparison on writing ability. The subject of the research was the third year students of Junior High School 2 Cerenti.The object was students’ errors in using degree of comparsion on their writing ability.The sample was 23 students of third year of junior high school 2 Cerenti. To get the data, the researcher used test. The test consistedof a paragraph involving degree of comparison. The test was conducted to find out the typesof the errors made by students in using degree of comparison on their writing. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that students commited errors into four types: addition, omission, misformation,and misordering. The result showed that most frequent errors made by the students in using degree of comparion on writing was in type ofmisordering with 68 or 47%, 29 or 20% in misformation, 36 or 25% in omission, and 13 or 9% in addition.
