Abstract

According to the preliminary research, it was found that the second grade students at the State Islamic Junior High School of Siak SriIndrapura got difficulties in reading such as some of the students were unable to identify the main idea of the text, because they worried about making a mistake; some of the students did not want to read loud when teacher asked them, because they felt anxious; some of the students were unable to answer the question from based on the text, because they were not confident with their selves; some of the students felt nervous. So that the aim of this research was to determine reading anxiety of the second grade students at the State Islamic Junior High School of Siak SriIndrapura, to investigate their reading comprehension and to determine whether there is or not significant correlation between reading anxiety and reading comprehension. This was correlational research design, multiple choice test was used to determine reading comprehension and questionnaire was used to determine reading anxiety. The population of the research was all of the second grade students at the State Islamic Junior High School of Siak SriIndrapura with the total number of 132 students. In determining the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. The total number of the sample was 34 students. The researcher used pearson product moment correlation coefficient, the result of the analysis was calculated by SPSS 16.0 program. Based on the data analysis, it showed that sig.t = 0.041 was smaller than 0.05 (sig.≤ 0.05). It can be concluded than Ha (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. In other words, there was a significant correlation between reading anxiety and reading comprehension of the second grade students at the State Islamic Junior High School of Siak SriIndrapura.
