Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems of students’ listening skill at Senior High School 1 Kampar. For example, some of the students did not fully understand spoken English instructions, lack of vocabulary; therefore it was hard for them to understand what they heard. Moreover, some students were not interested in some difficult materials especially in listening because they were not familiar with the native speakers’ language, and they were lack opportunity to improve their listening skill. The objective of this research was to find out if there is significant effect of the students’ listening skill after using audio media and audio visual media at the tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Kampar. The design of this research was a causal comparative design. The population of this research was the students of the tenth grade at Senior High School 1 Kampar in 2016-2017 academic years. The total number of population was 293 students. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling. The sample was class X MIA 2 that consisted of 35 students as experimental class 1, and class X MIA 4 that consisted of 35 students as control class 2. So, the number of sample from two classes was 70 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS 17 Version. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the score of t0 is higher than t table, which showed (2.034 <4.155>2.773). It can be concluded that the students’ listening skill taught by using audio visual media was better than who were taught by using audio media at Senior High School 1 Kampar.
