Abstract
In this research, the students still had difficulties in learning vocabulary,for example, some students could not classify and enrich about the meaning of words eventhough they had derivational words knowledge. They also did not have easy way to increase their vocabulary. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was a significant correlation between the students’ knowledge of derivational words and their knowledge of vocabulary.The design of this research was a correlational research. The population of this research was the second grade students of Islamic High School darel Hikmah Pekanbaru 2016-2017 academic years. The total number of population was 157 students. The sample was taken by random sampling technique. The sample of this research were 8 students of XI IPA 1, 8 students of XI IPA 2, 8 students of XI IPS 1, 8 students of XI IPS 2, and 8 students of XI AGAMA in which the total number of sample were 40 students. After analyzing the data, the writer found that the significant correlation was found of students’ knowledge of derivational words to their knowledge of vocabulary, it showed p was 0.000, the 2-tailed value was smaller than (p<0.05) the result proved that the scores correlate between students’ knowledge of derivational words to their knowledge of vocabulary at the second grade of Islamic high school Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru.
