Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate students’ reading comprehension of narrative text with and without taught by using marginal notes strategy at As-shofa Islamic Junior High School Pekanbaru. The study used quasi experimental research. The total population of this study was 150 students wchich there were 6 classes. Meanwhile, the sample in this study was 49 students of which the experimental group was VIII.1 and control group was VIII.5. This study was conducted from March until April 2017. It was eight meetings. Marginal notes strategy was used on experimental group while the control group were taught by another strategy. Data of this study were collected from pretest and post test. The type of test was multiple choice tests that consisted of 20 items. The pretest was given before the treatment to the experimental group and control group. The posttest was given after the treatment in experimental group and control group. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 20 with independent sample T test. It was found that there was significant effect of using marginal notes strategy on students’ reading comprehension at As-shofa Islamic Junior High School Pekanbaru. It was seen from the mean of posttest score of experimental group (62.50) and the mean of posttest score of control group (74.58). Key words: Marginal Notes Strategy, Effect, Reading Comprehension
