Abstract

This study aimed to know and describe the relationship between students’ verbal-linguistic intelligence and their speaking ability at the eleventh grade of Islamic Boarding School Madrasah Aliyah Darul Qur’an Tarai Bangun Kampar. After doing the observation, the writer found some problems, such as; some of students were difficult in answering question on English test as well as to speak in front of the class, some of students were not able to express their ideas orally, were not able to use grammar in speaking, some of students were lack of English vocabularies, and cannot pronounce the English words correctly. This study used a quantitative method with the correlational as the research design of study. There were 32 students that used as sample on this research. The sample determined by using total sampling technique. The instruments used for collecting data were verbal-linguistic intelligence questionnaire and oral test to measure students’ verbal-linguistic intelligence and their speaking ability. The data obtained from the instruments was calculated by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation on SPSS 17 program for Windows. Based on the research analysis, the relationship between the two variables was not found. Because the value of Sig.(2-tailed) was 0.059. It means that the value of Sig.(2-tailed) was bigger than α = 0.05. Hence, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected and null hypothesis (H0) was accepted. In conclusion, there was no significant relationship between students’ verbal-linguistic intelligence and their speaking ability the eleventh grade students of Islamic Boarding School Madrasah Aliyah Darul Qur’an Tarai Bangun Kampar.
